Whilst on my 2nd year of my nursing degree journey, I discovered that I was dyslexic. I was able to apply for specialist study skills support. I was extremely fortunate to be assigned to Karen and from our first meeting, she instantly made me feel at ease and reassured. Karen’s kind, friendly manner and her outstanding knowledge has made me believe in myself and has given me so much confidence with the life skills she has equipped me with, to be able to achieve my goals. Karen is not only an amazing study skills support tutor, she is also a supportive non-judgmental person and I truly feel blessed finding her at an older age. Karen has gone over and above to guide me and has helped me so much on my journey.
BSc (Hons) Nursing
I have had the absolute pleasure for the last 5 years to have received study skills support through Karen. She is a kind, supportive and a very patient study skills tutor. I have dyslexia and she makes studying a pleasure, whereas before she started supporting me I would dread writing an essay or assignment, or even contemplate reading huge chunks of written work. Once I have finished my degree I am hoping to complete a masters degree. Karen has played a huge part in building my confidence and courage to ever consider this. I would highly recommend her to my friends and family should they ever need study skills support.
Student C: BSc (Hons) Sports Psychology
Being on the autistic spectrum, having just one person to provide both academic and mental health support was very important, really helpful. It has meant that at times, I still completed my academic work, even when my mental wellbeing was lower. She offers duality and consistency, with empathy, life skills, and planning around my needs , level and goals. This is vital to me.

Karen has supported me for three years. She is the most consistent person in my entire academic life. From topics as varied as creative writing to modern and medieval history, I hope to continue to work with her through my academic journey.
Student J: BA (Hons) History
From the very beginning, Karen was personable, open and approachable. Karen seemed to know who I was, and that was so special to me. Karen is just so easy to talk to, very kind, but is also very practical, extremely knowledgeable and is open to change how she works to best match with my style/needs. She makes me feel safe in my individual self but also confident in my own abilities. She stops me when I’m going in the wrong direction and pushes me when I need it. It’s a gentle nudge. This has meant on the multiple occasions I wanted to quit, I haven’t because of her gentle encouragement.
Student A: BA (Hons) Creative Writing
As a mature student with multiple needs, I have worked with a number of mentors and study professionals over many years on my higher education journey. In that time I have had some good experiences and some bad ones. However, with Karen, I knew it was going to be my best experience as she had taken the time to read my paperwork and get to know me and my needs right from the start.
